COMING SOON - Ben Quilty ’The River’

Ben Quilty’s paintings have long moved between portraiture and landscape, holding space for questions of identity, place, and the weight of experience. In this new body of work, the landscape comes into sharper focus, not as a backdrop, but as something active, shifting and charged.

“Late in the afternoon and early in the morning, sunlight cuts across a vast rock shelf, illuminating the valley with a kind of theatrical precision. The space reveals itself as a stage, expansive, immersive, and strangely composed. It is this sense of both accident and intention that seems to hold Quilty’s attention, as though the landscape itself is performing.

Quilty’s ongoing enquiry into masculinity finds a new articulation here, as men enter the scene not as passive observers, but as agents of disruption. Holding axes, they hack into the very environment that surrounds them.”

’The River’ will be showing in the gallery from 13 May - 6 June.

COMING SOON - Zaachariaha Fielding ‘Nintirigu’

We are excited to present new works by acclaimed Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands artist Zaachariaha Fielding.

Well known in Australia and abroad as one half of music duo Electric Fields, Fielding’s paintings are an extension of his performances and musical output. These energetic and visceral works are embedded with iconography that draws on Inma – a living practice of traditional ceremonial song and dance that honours and pays respect to Anangu culture and ancestors.

Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country is an artist-led project bringing together major works by senior First Nations artists and collectives from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, Coober Pedy and Tarntanya/Adelaide, South Australia.

Working at an ambitious scale, these paintings depict Country while honouring the enduring power of Tjukurpa (Aṉangu law/cultural stories) that shapes and sustains community life.

Through distinctive visual languages, at times vibrant and expansive, at others quiet and restrained, artists and collectives translate Tjukurpa onto canvas, reinforcing deep connections to Country and the ongoing transmission of cultural knowledge across generations.

Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country is now open at the National Gallery of Australia.

COMING SOON - Zaachariaha Fielding ‘Nintirigu’

Born and raised in Mimili, on desert country in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, Zaachariaha Fielding comes from a long line of multidisciplinary artists, including his father Robert Fielding, a renowned senior artist and mentor. The exhibition title Nintirigu, which roughly translates to “I learnt,” reflects a strong connection to family, culture, and Country, as well as the passing down of cultural knowledge.

Well known in Australia and abroad as one half of the electronic music duo Electric Fields, Fielding’s paintings are an extension of his performances and musical output. These energetic and visceral works are embedded with iconography that draws on Inma – a living practice of traditional ceremonial song and dance that honours and pays respect to Anangu culture and ancestors.

“All of my works look like they sound like something, and that something is a memory cherished within me from Mimili. Everything I do as a visual artist has a musical component. The works are living versions of the sounds and ceremonies of my Mimili community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjatjara (APY) Lands.” – Zaachariaha Fielding, 2026
